Message to the reader
The main section of this issue is devoted to articles based on reports presented by students and graduates of the Department of General History of Art of the Faculty of History during the scientific seminar "Renaissance in Action. Spectacles and Arts in the Renaissance" in April 2023. The purpose of this seminar was to consider the connection between the plastic arts of the Renaissance and the spectacular culture using specific examples. Such an approach is now an essential tool for researchers who seek to recreate the "view of the era" and the visual experience of the artist and his viewer. Not only the language of painting is associated with everyday and festive impressions. The experience of the interior, architectural and urban space, the very structure of these spaces are inextricably linked with the performances and ceremonies that unfolded in them, turning them into a stage. The seminar discussed theoretical issues related to the concept of the period eye and the performative revolution in art history, as well as how liturgy and pious practices, illustrated sermons and theatrical performances staged in churches, court theatrical celebrations and festivities, court and diplomatic ceremonies, theatrical performances in the school theater, triumphs and ceremonial entries, and public mass spectacles were reflected in architecture and art.
In this issue of the journal in addition to the traditional headings we present to the attention of readers a new section - "History of the Ancient World" where you can read articles by young scientists dedicated to the history of ancient Rome. The study by M.N. Kirillova is devoted to the characteristic features of the organization of veteran settlements of the Sulla era. The article by Mirolyubov I.A. analyzes the reports of ancient writers about the menagerie of Emperor Augustus in the context of the events of his reign and the corresponding ideological background.
The section "In Memoriam" of this issue contains texts by two outstanding teachers of the Faculty of History who passed away in 2023 - professor and classicist Natalia Mikhailovna Nikulina (1938-2023) and medieval art historian Alexei Leonidovich Rastorguev (1958-2023). Article by N.M. Nikulina "On Monumental Painting and Vase Painting in the Art of Minoan Crete" was written shortly before her death and is devoted to one of the main themes that occupied her throughout her life - the art of the Aegean world; it was prepared for publication by her students T.P. Kishbali and A.N. Grigorieva. A.L. Rastorguev's essay, telling about the figurative structure of the sanctuary in Göbekli Tepe and the metaphysical experience of a plastically designed space, was to become the first of thirty chapters of the book he planned on the language of architecture; this text, in which the story of the most ancient architectural complex, a witness to the childhood of mankind, is combined with the author's childhood memories, is published in the author's version with minimal proofreading.
In the section "Conferences" the reader can get acquainted with the results of the international scientific conference "Portrait in Antiquity - Portrait all'antica" organized by the Department of General History of Arts in memory of professors N.M. Nikulina (1938-2023) and I.I. Tuchkov (1956-2018).
In the section "Reviews" the reader is offered an analysis of the microhistorical study by Thomas Cohen "Love and Death in Renaissance Italy" presented by E.O. Novikova and a review of the book "Named by Vasari. Gothic. Renaissance. Mannerism: Edition for the Trilogy of Exhibitions" prepared by A.A. Savchenkova.
